Pediatric Dentistry

Gentle care for growing smiles

A child's first dental visits set the tone for a lifetime of oral health. Children who have positive early experiences at the dentist are far more likely to maintain good dental hygiene as adults, and they are much less likely to develop dental anxiety that can lead to avoidance of care later in life.

At Gateway Smiles, we welcome children from their first tooth through their teen years. Our team is patient, gentle, and experienced with little ones who may be nervous about their first visit. We use age-appropriate language to explain everything we do, we go slowly, and we celebrate every successful appointment with our young patients.

Beyond cleanings and exams, pediatric care at our office includes fluoride treatments, dental sealants for permanent molars, growth and development monitoring, early orthodontic screening, and emergency care for the chipped or knocked-out teeth that are an unfortunate part of childhood. We are a family practice — siblings, parents, and grandparents are all welcome — and we love being the dental home for entire families.

The Gateway Smiles approach

Calm, kid-friendly environment

Our team takes the time to make every child feel comfortable. Slow introductions, plenty of explanation, and small celebrations after each visit help build positive associations with the dentist.

Prevention focused

Children's teeth and gums need different care than adults. Fluoride treatments, sealants on the permanent molars, and education about brushing and flossing are the foundation of pediatric care at our office.

Early intervention when needed

We screen for orthodontic issues, bite problems, and developmental concerns at every pediatric visit. Catching issues early often means simpler, less expensive treatment later.

A dental home for the whole family

We see parents and children at the same practice. That continuity makes scheduling easier, keeps care coordinated, and lets us understand your family's overall oral health history.

Insurance and cost

Pediatric preventive care — cleanings, exams, fluoride, and sealants — is typically covered at 100% by dental insurance and many state-funded children's health plans. We work with most major dental insurance plans and will verify your child's benefits before the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits are short and focused on introducing your child to the dental environment, examining the first teeth, and educating parents about cleaning, fluoride, and diet.

Yes. Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars, where most childhood cavities form. They are highly effective, painless to apply, and typically covered by insurance. We recommend sealants for most children once their permanent molars erupt, around age 6 and again around age 12.

We have a lot of experience with anxious kids and we go at their pace. The first visit may just be a chance to meet the team, sit in the chair, and look at the tools — no exam required. We have found that patience and a slow introduction work wonders, and many children who were initially fearful become enthusiastic about their dental visits over time.

We recommend a cleaning and exam every six months, just like adults. This schedule lets us catch any issues early and monitor your child's growth and development over time.

We take X-rays only when necessary for diagnosis or to monitor development, and we use the lowest-radiation digital equipment available. We follow ADA guidelines on pediatric radiology and will always explain why an X-ray is needed before taking one.

For routine orthodontic evaluation and Invisalign for teens, we can typically handle those needs in-office. For complex orthodontic cases or pediatric oral surgery, we work with experienced pediatric specialists in the Fredericksburg area and coordinate every step of your child's care.
